It is that time of the year again. A lot of snow falling in Lesotho,
especially along three main mountain ranges; the Drakensberg, the Maluti and the Machache ranges. The picture on the right was taken this morning (27/06/2007) from the Development House in Maseru. Those who have been in Maseru long enough, say this has been the heaviest snowfall in this area over the past 40 years.

I am not excited at all by the huge snowfall which Lesotho experienced over the past 2 days. For I have stayed long enough in this country to fully understand what the implications are:
MISERY 1 - Hunger, thirst and cold weather will adversely affect animals, herders and shepherds alike.
MISERY 2 - Hunger, thirst and cold weather will adversely affect the rural poor.
MISERY 3 - Hunger, thirst and cold weather will harm winter crops.

What is most unfortunate is that the LCD government will not act, as usual. Who will be worst affected? The rural poor. Who voted the LCD into power? The rural poor. Who gets the least attention from the LCD government? The rural poor. This is truly ironic.
